Vertebroplasty or Kyphoplasty What Do These Procedures do?

What is vertebroplasty? Let me tell you, vertebroplasty is a procedure that can be done after sustaining a compressed fracture in the spine. This is usually done 4-6 weeks after the fracture, the doctor injects bone cement into the spine to keep it stable, and lessen the pain. This also helps further fractures to the vertebrae. Had I been correctly diagnosed when I sustained my fractures, I could have had this done and would not have to live with pain everyday. This procedure is done in the hospital, and you might have to stay overnight. Remember, if you think you might have sustained a compressed fracture, make sure to tell your doctor to check your spine with a x-ray.

What is Kyphoplasty?Let me tell you about this one, the doctor inserts a balloon device in the fractured vertebra. This helps to restore the height and the shape of the vertebrae. Once removed, the device leaves a small cavity that the doctor then fills with bone cement. This procedure can be done 4-6 weeks after the fracture also. It can also be done later if you did not know you had a compressed fracture, such as like myself.

I hope you found this to be great information, I know I did while doing my research.

Until next time!

Cecilia
